I had forgotten that Singapore and Malaysia have permanent daylight saving. The sun doesn’t get up until 7am. As we had to be at the airport at 7, I missed the bougainvillea again.

When we left Sydney at 3:30pm we had time for lunch in the two hours between checking in and departure. We made the mistake of going through security before finding somewhere to eat. The places in side were expensive and uninteresting compared with what we had passed on the way in. So in Singapore I decided we should look outside first. Nothing.

Once inside (no security just a quick stamp on the passport) we found a great variety and settled on a delicious marsala dosa – one of my favourite breakfasts.

I liked the carpet.

The security was at the departure gate. So instead of the huge bottleneck just after check in, there is a plane load only to be got through. Much easier on the nerves. Probably more expensive in terms of manpower but that is cheap in Asia.

The flight was uneventful. Again there was a choice of hundreds of movies, TV shows and games on the individual screens. It is interesting to watch a French movie followed by a Chinese movie followed by a Japanese movie. On the way back I will catch up with the Indian and Korean offerings.

At Heathrow the queue for immigration was enormous; there were at least 1000 people backed up and only 6 officers. It took over an hour to get through. The paucity of officers is the fault of the government, according to the chief. We asked where we could complain and were given a pamphlet that didn’t have an address on it!

The hotel was having its internet updated so that wasn’t available the night we were there. Neither could they give us a wake up call at 4:30am because it was tied in with the internet system. And breakfast wasn’t served until 6am but they did give is a breakfast box as we had already paid for a “full breakfast.” Dinner wasn’t a success either. It is always nice to leave London.

The flight to Lisbon was delayed while we waited for some passengers who were transiting from another flight. I know where they were stuck!
